How many countries make up the European Union (EU)? 28 Identify and explain three benefits of the EU for UK businesses. 1.      The business will increase in market size – as a result of freedom of movement of goods and services. UK businesses can sell to any of the other fourteen countries without facing extra costs or restrictions on the types of products they can sell. 2.      Greater access to cheap factors of production – raw materials, technology and labour. They can employ from any part of Europe. The NHS is an example of this as they get skilled doctors and nurses when they have had shortages. 3.      Lower administration costs to trade – do not have to pay extra money to send goods abroad, other than normal transport costs. Explain the significance of a free trade area and a customs union, such as that provided by the EU, for a business, based in the UK that buys its supplies from busi...

Name three international organisations that have promoted free trade and FDI (3 marks) 1.        World Trade Organisation (WTO) 2.        International Monetary Fund (IMF) 3.        World Bank Suggest reasons why these organisations may be considered controversial (6 marks) The World Trade Organisation does have positive aspects, but there are some negatives which make the organisation seem controversial. It has repeatedly exposed home-grown products to foreign competition. Foreign goods are cheaper and better quality and this has meant that more local firms have gone out of business. Additionally, because of the decline in local companies staying alive, many people have become unemployed which as a result. Add this to the fact that EU and North American countries trade unfairly with developing countries by showing no care for the environment and respect for the natural res...

With reference to earthquake (seismic) waves, explain two reasons why it is difficult for buildings to remain intact during an earthquake. (4 marks) One reason why it may be difficult for buildings to stay up during an earthquake is the secondary love waves, which moves side to side. These waves can be very damaging to the foundations of structures because of their movement, making buildings fall as their bases can no longer support this weight above. A second reason which causes buildings to collapse during earthquakes is the damage that primary seismic waves can do. They move away from the source of the earthquake, pushing and pulling rock. This can cause soil to compress, making the ground fully saturated with water. The soil becomes weaker and so may not be able to support the buildings above it, thus making them fall. Explain the link between plate boundary type and the strength of the earthquake (seismic) waves. (6 marks) The strength of an earthquake can d...

Explain what is meant by the term 'shrinking world'. The term 'shrinking world' describes how the world appears smaller to us because of globalisation. Globalisation is a process of global integration of economies, politics, products, ideas and other aspects of culture; it has led to the free movement of people, companies becoming multinational and an increase in international trade. Because of the development of technology, we are now able to communicate and share information in a matter of moments to anywhere in the world. Many countries can be affected by things that happen in another-for example the global economy can be affected by a natural disaster. These factors create a 'shrinking world', as it is cheaper and more efficient to make these connections than in the past. The world appears a smaller place because borders and oceans do not restrict people, information or interactions between countries on opposite sides of the world. Assess ...
